I read the summary of A Tale of a Ring by Ilan Sheinfeld but I was still not fully prepared for all of the scandal.
Esperansa Gantz is a Jewish prostitute living in Buenos Aires telling the story of a ring forged to save Reine-Chaya from epilepsy. The ring, however, appears to have an additional power: it leaves destruction in its wake, which made me wonder if some of the characters' misfortunes were caused by their own choices or a seemingly innocent object. Is the ring equipped with an enchantment or a curse?
As you can assume, since several of the characters are prostitutes, I do not recommend this book to the faint-hearted, however I do believe that it has a great message as well as being skillfully included, and often ignored, historical details.
Ilan Sheinfeld uses a few different languages throughout the novel and they are, in my opinion, necessary to the story and well done. There are a variety of characters and several storylines that Sheinfeld wove together.
Honestly, around halfway through the novel, I was still debating on rating A Tale of a Ring with 4 or 5 stars on Amazon, the ending secured a 5 star rating, which is not necessarily easy for some of the books I have reviewed.
